In 1932 Paul and Claire were teachers at the mixed school of Saint-André in the Gard and had three children: Antoine, 11, René, 10, and Tofette, 8. As of July, Paul collaborates with Rachel, of Saint-Pierre, to prepare his sons and other pupils for the next certificate of study. At the end of the year, Antoine has his certificate but is not the first in the canton as Paul hoped, although his 8 candidates have succeeded. Antoine admits that Pascaline gave him 500 francs to give him 1st place. René will get it the following year. At 24, Pascaline marries Antoine who reveals that the 500 F came from his mother's lover for his silence.
